Elwood (sternwheeler)
Elwood was a sternwheel steamboat which was built to operate on the Willamette River, in Oregon, but which later operated on the Lewis River in Washington, the Stikine River in Canada, and on Puget Sound. The name of this vessel is sometimes seen spelled "Ellwood". Elwood is probably best known for an incident in 1893, when it was approaching the Madison Street Bridge over the Willamette River in Portland, Oregon. The bridge swung open to allow the steamer to pass. However, a streetcar coming in from the east end of the bridge failed to notice the bridge was open, and ran off into the river in the Madison Street Bridge disaster.
Construction
Elwood was built in 1891 at Portland, Oregon by Johnston & Oleson, for the concern of Jason Eldridge and the three brothers Guy V. Abernethy, Charles H. Abernethy, and George Abernethy, of Champoeg, Oregon. Another source gives the builder as Joseph Pacquart. The Abernethy brothers were descendants of George Abernethy (c1807-1877), provisional governor of Oregon.

Elwood (dog)
Elwood was the 2007 winner of the World's Ugliest Dog Contest, and had come in second in the contest the year before. His owner was Karen Quigley, a resident of Sewell, New Jersey, United States. He was a two-year-old Chinese Crested/chihuahua mixed breed. Elwood died on November 28, 2013. He was eight years old.
History
Elwood was rescued as a result of an NJ Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals investigation. He was shivering, had a runny nose, and was making strange sounds when Karen came over to see him. Elwood still made those strange noises. Elwood's breeder felt as if Elwood was too ugly to sell and was going to put him down due to the fact that she could not sell him to anyone. Karen Quigley, Elwood's owner, was friends with John, who was the investigator that was called to the case of Elwood. Karen immediately fell in love with Elwood and took him to her home where she also owned other rescued cats and dogs.
Appearance
Elwood had a strip of white hair on his head, big eyes and a tongue which is literally too large for his mouth and hangs out of the side of it.

Elwood is the musical project/collaboration of singer-songwriters Prince Elwood Strickland III and co-producer and songwriter Brian Boland. (born in the U.S. state of North Carolina) worked as a recording engineer at Soho's Greene Street Recording Facility where he and Boland met, working with artists such as Tricky, Mos Def, De La Soul, and Adam Yauch.
